Catacombs

First thing in the morning on October 5, we headed out to our scheduled tour of the catacombs. We got to the office, and it was in an unassuming little building on a street corner. Seriously, I never would have noticed it. We were in the first tour of the day and the first ones to arrive. They hadn't unlocked the building yet so we stood outside, first in line! The employees came out a little bit afterward and set up a sign that said all tours were full so I was REALLY glad Katie and Jim got up at 2:30 AM the week before and signed up for the tour. Some other American showed up and asked one of the employees if the tours were actually all sold out and the employee confirmed it. Always book in advance if you can!

The unfortunate part was that no strollers were allowed and there was nowhere to store them. Christian, who wasn't really keen on seeing the catacombs, volunteered to stay up top with Abbie, who was not having a fun time anyway.

I love the logo!

We had to walk a long way (Quarter of a mile? Half a mile?) along this tunnel. Since we were first in line, we were first inside (in spite of a ticket issue that Katie had, we still managed to be first).

There was an option to get an audio tour guide, but we opted not to, so we didn't have to stop at the various tour points. This meant it seemed like we had the place to ourselves.

vaults of some kind.

Here we are at the entrance to the catacombs

It was wonderfully creepy!

Femurs and skulls in decorative patterns!

Some of the skulls were damaged, but still the wall remains.

yards and yards of femurs and skulls

I wonder who this was? What were they like? When did they live? How did they spend their days?

Behind the femurs and skulls it was just a mess of piled up bones, all the other bones that weren't femurs and skulls.

After the catacombs, I spent a delightful amount of money on some delightful bony souvenirs in the gift shop--a kitty skeleton candle, a skull emblazoned on a vodka shot glass, a silicone eggcooker to shape fried eggs into a skull shape. I wanted to buy lots of skull things!

Lunch at a place tucked in a corner where you wouldn't know there was a restaurant. Jim enjoyed his soda
